I didn't grow up Southern but I can definitely claim it now and it is a big Southern tradition to eat collard greens, black eyed peas and cornbread on New Years Day. The collards are meant to bring money into your new year, the black eyed peas are for luck and the cornbread is for gold. So that's what we did, because money, luck and gold are certainly things we can use in 2009! Not to mention that this meal is just really really good! Welcome 2009...
